"Maa, kaisa dikh raha hoon ?”, he asked looking at his mom through the mirror.
“ Bahut pyaare beta. Bilkul officer ke jaise. Agar papa hote toh bohot khush hote ”, she said with tears in her eyes remembering her husband who could never be forgotten.
He asked for water and tried deviating from the topic.
He left for work, dreaming about those little wishes he had.
He was excited looking at his reflections all over in the lift. It was his first time in the lift.
He set his hair and looked at his uniform and took pride in wearing it.
He reported to his senior and resumed work.
“Which floor ma’am ?”, he asked
“Ground floor”, she replied in arrogance.
“ He was not aware that 0 was ground floor in his building”
The lift had already moved to the basement by the time he could press the button.
“ You fool, I’ve no time to waste till the lift goes up. You wasted my time. I’m the manager of this company. I’ll chuck you out of the job if you repeat this next time”, she shouted forgetting there were people around.
He apologised and was broken as it was his first day at work. He felt shattered as his dreams were big and this job was the beginning of his big dream.
“Bhaiyya 4th floor”, he heard from a beautifully sounding gentle voice.
She had witnessed the entire scene.
“Kabhi Kabhi yeh sab ho jaata hai. Chod do”, she said and tried consoling him.
Nodding his head he replied, “ Theek hai madam”
He found someone who could empathize him.
On opening of the lift door she acknowledged him and said “Thank you bhaiyaa”,
“ Kindly arrange for a soft skills training for all the managers and also for a GRATITUDE WEEK to acknowledge the supporting staff of this company.
- Jyothi(CEO) ”
A mail was sent to her personal secretary immediately after this incident.
He secretly thanked God for the change and prayed for the person who initiated it. Little did he know about the lady who consoled him.
Yes, she was the CEO, an empathetic CEO who was on rounds to check the operations at work. She wanted a change for her employees and make it a better working place as employees are the greatest assets and all had equal role to play in its growth.
Time at times could be compromised but never dignity to oneself and others.
“ Respect is one of the greatest treasures. I mean, what does it all add upto if you don’t have it all?” –Marilyn Monroe
Dedicated to all the lift operators and other supporting security staff :)
